CityU of Seattle will be at Gnomedex starting Friday the 21rst of August, and we are looking forward to meeting up with people who are going to be there. As we research education programs in social media, some of the guest speakers are going to be truly impactful to the program we are thinking of building out.
So why would a college want to teach social media, all one really has to do is look at the adoption of systems like FriendFeed, Twitter, Social Median, Facebook, MySpace and scores of other systems that companies and people are coexisting on and sharing information back and forth. Probably one of the most interesting companies out there when it comes to social media is Comcast and the Comcast Cares group of people who monitor social media for the use of their name. Another is Dairy Queen, and even more companies like Mazda are all using types of social media to highlight the things they do, highlight their products and services, which are used by people. Companies have never had to contend with direct feedback like the feedback that social media provides.
How companies and people deal with the new world of social media is very important, not just from a marketing or public relations viewpoint, but in how companies and people can interrelate to each other to provide a better service or a better product. That is one of the reasons that social media is so important to understand and know about as companies move into this brave new world of immediate and direct consumer feedback.
Gomedex provides a viewpoint into social media in a small comfortable intimate setting with some of the biggest and brightest people in social media. I attended 2008 and pulled a lot of valuable information out of the program, this year should prove to be no different. If you are going, look us up, sit down and tell us what we should be teaching and how we should approach teaching social media in an educational setting. At the very least your feedback will help guide the program and the things we should be doing. If you have ideas and miss us at Gnomedex, submit a comment here, we will read it and if it truly fits, then it might just end up in the final program.
